12. There’s a hole in my story, dear Agent

Part of the series “From Zero to Hero – Journey of a Novelist”
<– PREVIOUS | TOC | NEXT –>

Edited to add: Here’s a You Tube of the Sesame Street “There’s a Hole in the Bucket, dear Liza”

There's a hole in my story, dear Agent, dear Agent,
There's a hole in my story, dear Agent, a hole.
Then fill it, dear Author, dear Author, dear Author,
Oh fill it, dear Author, dear Author, go fill.

With what shall I fill it, dear Agent, dear Agent?
With what shall I fill it, dear Agent, with what?
More Action, dear Author, dear Author, dear Author,
Add Action, dear Author, dear Author, Show It.

But the Reader won't get it, dear Agent, dear Agent,
The Reader won't get it, dear Agent, they won't.
Describe it, dear Author, dear Author, dear Author,
Use Description, dear Author, dear Author, Tell It.

Description's too boring, dear Agent, dear Agent.
Description's too boring, dear Agent, what now?
Use a Flashback, dear Author, dear Author, dear Author,
A Flashback, dear Author, dear Author, go back.

It's just the first Chapter, dear Agent, dear Agent,
I can't use a flashback, dear Agent, too soon.
Then throw in some Dialog, dear Author, dear Author,
A nice juicy Dialog, dear Author, go write.

But what shall they speak of, dear Agent, dear Agent?
But what shall they speak of, dear Agent, I'm lost.
How about Conflict, dear Author, dear Author?
Go put in some Conflict, dear Author, please write.

But why should they argue, dear Agent, dear Agent?
They're friendly, dear Agent, dear Agent, so how?
Build up to a Plot Point, dear Author, dear Author,
Events are Inciting, dear Author, GO WRITE!

But what is a Plot Point, dear Agent, dear Agent?
But what is a Plot Point, dear Agent, please help!
A Plot Point is Big Change, dear Author, dear Author,
There's no turning back now, dear Author, they're hooked.

But how can I hook them, dear Agent, dear Agent?
But how can I hook them, the Readers, they're bored!
The Plot Points are hooks for your Characters, dear Author,
The Plot Points mean big change for Characters, not you!

But how can I hook them, the Characters, dear Agent?
There's a hole in my story, dear Agent, a hole.
